Did you know ………
September 4th, 2009That more crashes involve skids in Summer than in Winter? Why? Many drivers don’t realise that as tyre wear on the road the rubber dust has to go somewhere as does the oil and grease that falls out of vehicles. When the weather is warm and dry most of it settles into the small cracks on the road surface and then floats out again when it rains. If the rain has been heavy enough then it will wash the surface clean but with only a light shower the rubber, oil, grease and water mix to give a skid-pan like surface. So if it’s been dry for a while and then you’re driving in a light shower remember that you are now more than likely driving on a very slippery surface and take extra care with acceleration, braking and steering. Remember – skids don’t just happen – they are caused by the driver getting the changes of speed or direction wrong!
